I respect Mike Havrilla as a person, pharmacist, and trader, so when I found out that he expressed much confidence in a clinical trial, I wanted to learn more. I am passing this information on to my subscribers.
I currently have no position in AMRN, but I am looking to open one after the October Run-Ups.

The following was written by Mike Havrilla:
Amarin Corp. (NASDAQ:AMRN) is developing AMR101 (Ethyl-EPA) as a prescription-grade omega-3 fatty acid that has been marketed in Japan for over 10 years as EPADEL by Mochida Pharma. Ethyl-EPA is differentiated from Glaxo’s (NYSE:GSK) $1 billion dollar product LOVAZA (omega-3-acid ethyl esters) in the following key areas:
- no fishy smell / taste or GI side effects such as burping = better patient compliance since these are both taken every day
- - lacks Ethyl-DHA omega-3 fatty acid component, which can raise bad cholesterol (LDL) levels
- - potential to address a much larger patient population including those with triglyceride levels of 200-500 mg/dL vs. LOVAZA, which is indicated for patients with triglyceride levels greater than 500 mg/dL
- an under the radar opportunity with little research analyst coverage and largely unknown by Wall Street
- targeting an enormous market opportunity that encompasses cardiovascular disease and the evolving recognition of the need to treat triglycerides, which has the potential to become a multi-billion market opportunity similar in scope and size to statin drugs such as the world’s top selling drug Lipitor that is about to face generic competition
- many potential big pharma suitors, including obvious names such as Glaxo given the potential threat to their billion dollar drug LOVAZA, which is currently the only FDA-approved prescription omega-3 fatty acid product and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) which will soon face generic competition for Lipitor and may look for another potential blockbuster drug in the area of cardiovascular disease
- potential for a milestone-based partnership ahead of the pivotal results since Ethyl-EPA represents a relatively low-risk of clinical development since it has been used for over a decade in Japan and represents a purified version of the major component in LOVAZA
- potential for the Company to complete patient enrollment and report results from the pivotal studies ahead of current guidance (please note the timeline has already been shortened by one year from the Company’s original guidance of reporting Phase 3 results in 2012)

How strong is their patent position? This would be a concern for me with a company like this.
Bring your question over to the “Ask Mike Havrilla” section of the forum- he really is the expert on this stock:

There is not enough differentiation between the products to make one preferable to the other. Lovaza can be prescribed by a doctor for ANY indication including those with triglyceride levels *less* than 500 mg/dL. It is called “off-label” prescription and the “off” in that case is hardly significant. “Burping”? Yep! That is a real product killer! The net result will be a price war for market share. If a person cannot find a better place to put dollars than into this then there is a bigger problem waiting in the future. But good luck!
The_WACG, You are totally WRONG! There is a good reason why the FDA TWICE declined to approve Lovaza for people with triglycerides less than 500….It is because Lovaza RAISES the BAD Cholesterol!
AMR101 from numerous studies in Japan does NOT raise LDL cholesterol!
AMR101 will be seen as FAR superior and will be approved for the market that is 10 times larger than Lovaza.
A doctor will be potentially incurring a major liability for prescribing a medication for an indication that it is NOT approved for when there is a BETTER one that is approved for that indication.
NO smart Doc will prescribe Lovaza for people with triglycerides under 500 when AMR101 is on the market.
Furthermore, MOST Docs will use AMR101 in the over 500 group because it is a superior product, because it does NOT raise the level of bad cholesterol.
The products are NOT the same!
There is a good reason that the same molecule, EPA, has been used in Japan for over a decade, rather than using plain fish oil otherwise known as Lovaza.
Bottom line, you have NO idea what you are talking about!
I’ve done my DD with AMRN- initiated a position and have been rewarded with gains already- I think this has a very good chance of approval, and has “block buster potential”. There certainly is high risk/reward potential here. It’s a “one trick pony”, a biological extract formulation-much like QCOR- but I think there is a bit more patent protection here. AMR101 has some characteristics that are superior to Lovaza, and would likely find a strong competitive foothold in the US market.

There are strong forces holding it down down below $3 at this point.
My strategy for this one is to maintain a core position and then go scalping- The limits of the open/close prices for me will be $2.05/$2.60-
